Regent Santa Monica Opening - Projection Mapping

Clients: Regent Santa Monica
Project: Yokai Films, Black Oak Technical Productions, Kaleidoscope Vue
Motion Graphic Design and Animation: JC Tecklenburg
Additional Motion Graphics: Konstantin Eydelman

For the opening night of the new Regent Santa Monica Hotel (formerly the Loews). I was brought in as a video production vendor to produce projection mapping content; with the crown jewel being a two and a half minute long showcase show to open the event on the front facade.

In addition to the main show reveal, I put together 3 nights of curated content to be projected on the front facade. Poolside during the event, I also produced multiple animated projection styles to support different live-acts. All created with little more than walkthrough photos as a spec sheet.

  • Flowing Fabric Looping Animation into the main show

  • Full 2.5min Hotel Opening Show on the Hotel Facade

  • A Diamond Sheen Looping Animation after the main show

  • 3 curated themed footage montages to be projected on the facade in the days leading up to the event. (Palm Tree Sunsets, Lapping Waves, and Skate-Park)

  • 8 Poolside Projection Mapping Themes to accompany live events. (Tropical Flowers, 70s Graphic Muscle Beach, Fog and Water Tank, Rose Petals, Particle Flows, Animated Tropical Illustrations from the Event Invite, Turbulent White Water, Gold Fractured)

  • Animated Event Invitation Welcome Graphics

I was also on-site during event load-in as the projection team set up and mapped the spaces in order to make any necessary changes.

Addition Projection Mapping Content

Building Something from Nothing

Initially without any specs other than “Projection Mapping on this building” and some 360 photos, I pulled publicly available data and any reference on the building I could find. By using that, and some google maps data, I was able to build relatively accurate layout files to work from. I also developed all the graphics at 4K despite not knowing any resolution specs to ensure high fidelity, even if the ultimate projections had a lower resolution.

Branding Brought to Life

Rooted in purpose, shaped by vision, driven by results.
Welcome to a space designed for ideas that move people. With a focus on quality, clarity, and connection, we're here to help you make an impact that lasts.

Saving Time and Money

I was able to repurpose elements from previous projects. For example, by re-rendering the rose from We Do Bones in different angles and lighting I was able to dedicate more time to design and animation of other elements.
